Teeth can hurt a lot and, we’re sure you already know that the best thing you can do is go to your dentist as soon as possible. But if they’re closed or you can’t get there for some reason, here are some things you can do at home to try to relieve tooth pain.
Clove oil acts as a numbing solution. This stuff is really good it’s an essential oil you can grab on Amazon for less than ten to fifteen bucks. The active ingredient in the oil is called eugenol. Eugenol is a natural anesthetic and antibacterial that can reduce inflammation in the mouth. You soak up a few drops with a q-tip or a cotton ball then gently place it on the tooth or gums at the site of pain. You can also dilute it in vegetable oil if it’s too strong. You can also take over-the-counter pain relievers along with clove oil. Ibuprofen, acetaminophen and aspirin tend to work best because they also take care of the swelling so take it based on the instructions on the bottle.
Warm salt water rinses are always a good thing to do and, you can also add over-the-counter topical anesthetics like benzocaine gel or Sucrets.

If you do have tooth pain, we have this system or protocol that we call the 3, 3 & 3 for tooth pain. Catchy, we know. But we say it so that when our patients go home, they can remember it.
If you have tooth pain, there’s inflammation inside of the tooth, tooth pain is pretty excruciating. On a scale of 1 to 10, a lot of people will say 10. They’ve had childbirth, they’ve had brain surgery, they’ve had kidney stones, and they still rate it a 9 or 10.
What do you do? What do you do until you can get to see your dentist to relieve tooth pain?
There are two things that we’d recommend—the 3, 3 & 3, we’ll get to that.
The other thing that doesn’t get often discussed is when you lie down.
Let’s say you won’t see the dentist until the next day, when you sleep at night, keep your head elevated.
When you drop your head to the level of your heart, your body and you’re lying down, all the blood rushes to your head, the blood pressure changes in that area where the swelling is the inflammatory response, and it just makes it worse. Keep your head elevated. A wedge-shaped pillow would be great. And here’s the 3, 3 & 3. And if you can—of course, discuss this with your dentist or with your doctor. Make sure that you can take Advil or Ibuprofen (Ibuprofen is the generic term). Take three Advils three times a day for three days. That’s the 3, 3 & 3. And the important part is this. Don’t take it, and then when the pain goes away or lessens, don’t stop taking it. The trick with Advil is it works very well with inflammation. That’s where most of the pain comes from in tooth pain. It comes from that inflammatory expanding state in a closed space inside of the tooth. You have to reduce the inflammation, and then the pain will go away temporarily. The key here is to keep the titer levels, the concentration in your system up. For those three days, even if you’ve seen the dentist in that interim time, keep it up.
10 Ways to Kill a Toothache In a Minute for Relieve Tooth Pain
