Call your dentist immediately.
 Severe or persistent tooth pain often signals infection or decay. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever (ibuprofen or acetaminophen) and apply a cold compress to your cheek (avoid heat). Do not put painkillers directly on the tooth or use heat (it worsens pain). Rinse with warm water and gently floss to clear any debris. If the pain is extreme, spreading, or accompanied by fever/swelling, seek urgent dental care or call 911 if breathing/swallowing is affected.

A knocked-out adult tooth is a true emergency.
Pick it up by the crown (avoid touching the root) and rinse it gently under water if dirty. Then reinsert it into the socket if you can (hold it in place with clean gauze or a finger). If reinsertion isn’t possible, place the tooth in a container of milk or saliva. Get to your dentist (or the nearest dentist) within 30–60 minutes, as quick reimplantation greatly increases the chance of saving the tooth. Do not handle a baby tooth this way (baby teeth are not reimplanted).
If the injury involves heavy bleeding, jaw trauma or consciousness loss, call 911 immediately.

Even a broken tooth can often be saved.
Rinse your mouth with warm water. Call your dentist right away to describe the break and arrange care. Save any large broken pieces of tooth in cold milk and bring them with you. Use a cold compress to reduce swelling and take ibuprofen for pain. Avoid chewing with the injured side of your mouth. The dentist will usually repair minor chips with a filling or bonding, or may need a root canal and crown for serious fractures. If you are in pain or if there’s bleeding that won’t stop, seek urgent care.

Contact your dentist as soon as possible. In the meantime, cover the exposed tooth area: you can use a piece of softened sugarless gum or denture adhesive over the spot. If a crown has come off, retrieve it if you can, clean it, and store it in milk or saline. You may try to temporarily re-seat it with denture adhesive or a piece of wax, but do not swallow it. See your dentist promptly to replace or repair the filling/crown. Leaving the tooth exposed can cause pain or further damage.

Apply gentle, firm pressure to the bleeding area with clean gauze or a tea bag for at least 10–15 minutes. Keep sitting upright and biting down on the gauze. If bleeding persists beyond 15–20 minutes despite pressure, this is an emergency. Go to the nearest emergency department or call 911. If bleeding is from a lip or tongue injury, press on it with a clean cloth, use ice to reduce swelling, and seek hospital care if it won’t stop.

Facial or jaw swelling often means a spreading infection (abscess). Contact your dentist immediately. You may need antibiotics and urgent drainage. Apply cold compresses for the first 24–48 hours to reduce swelling. Do not wait! since infections can spread quickly. If swelling worsens, or you develop a fever, difficulty swallowing, or the swelling makes breathing hard, seek emergency medical care (call 911). These can be signs of a serious deep infection requiring hospital treatment.

For any significant blow or fall to the face/jaw, treat it seriously. If you notice severe pain, swelling, trouble opening/closing your mouth, or if your teeth no longer align, this may be a fracture. Also watch for dizziness or loss of consciousness. These need immediate medical attention. If unconscious or seriously injured, call 911 or go to a hospital before dental care. For other cases, apply ice to reduce swelling. See your dentist as soon as possible for any cracked/dislodged teeth.
Remember: broken jaw or deep cuts can be life-threatening, so don’t hesitate to call 911.

Common orthodontic issues (loose bracket, poking wire) are not life-threatening and can wait for a repair. Try to ease discomfort: gently push a poking wire flat with a cotton swab or cover it with orthodontic wax. If a bracket or wire is loose, do not cut it out; save any pieces and call your orthodontist as soon as possible for an urgent fix. Rinse with salt water if sore. True medical emergencies (heavy bleeding, suspected jaw fracture, knocked-out tooth) still require 911. Otherwise, contact your orthodontist promptly . They will schedule a quick visit to reattach or adjust the appliance.

Some discomfort is normal after treatment, but watch for red flags. If pain or swelling increases 2–3 days post-treatment (e.g. a dry socket after extraction), or you develop fever, call your dentist immediately. To control minor bleeding after an extraction, bite on gauze for an hour; if bleeding continues after a few hours, reapply pressure and if it still won’t stop, contact your dentist. Don’t rinse vigorously or disturb a clot. For any prolonged bleeding, uncontrolled pain, numbness, or signs of infection (pus, severe swelling, fever), seek urgent dental or medical care.
